Historic and technical information
Denomination :     86 T Boileau-Debladis Origin :       ( Industrie privée)

Historic context :

The mortier pneumatique Boileau-Debladis 86T was built with a 86 mm diameter barrel associated to a pressurized air tank, the whole assembly being placed on a steel carriage allowing two firing angles only : 45 degrees and 60 degrees. The tank could be fed by a air pump or a compressed air bottle, and was linked to the barrel bottom via an adjustable automatic valve that was normally closed. The shot range was set by the combination of the chosen angle anjd the air pressure.

At the firing time, the tank pressure was increased until it reached the value preset on the automatic valve, making this one open and allowing the compressed air to rush inside the barrel bottom, ejecting the fin-tailed fragmentation projectile Boileau-Debladis. The mortar was also able to shot the 'Excelsior' fin-tailed grenade of the 'Aasen' mortar.

This infantry support weapon was present on the front in 1916. Like most of the weapons of the same type, it disappeared at the profit of the Stokes mortar before the end of the war.
