Historic context :

The Captain Perepelkin designed at the Obuchov plants between 1902 and 1903 this little mountain gun able to fire the ammunition of the 3-inches M1900 fieldgun. It was adopted by the Russian army in 1904 and took the name '3 inches quick firing mountain gun M1904'.

This weapon was equipped with interesting technological innovations, such as the low position of the barrel trunnions axis very close to the carriage horizontal axis in order to limit the torque that was usually making the gun jump when firing, and a double hydro-spring recoil recuperating system whose two cylinders were located on the top of and below the barrel . The gun could be disassembled into 5 separate loads for the transportation on pack animals.

But this gun was found disappointing when used : the low position of the barrel was limiting the elevation angle (and consequently the range), and the two recoil recuperation system cylinders were found very difficult to synchronize, not to mention the dust and mud that were accumulating on the lower cylinder during towing. Therefore it was quickly and thankfully replaced in 1909 by the much more talented 3-inches M1909 Putilov designed by Schneider-Danglis.
